WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO THE CHURCH?

For a long time now, the Church in America has been in decline. While some 63% still claim a level of faith, a much smaller percentage actually agree with what the Bible actually teaches, especially in areas of what constitutes sin, what constitutes righteousness, and whether or not we’ll face any consequences from God for getting it wrong. Consequently, the impact and influence of the Church upon culture - and especially upon non-believers - has been diminished.

What is needed is a faithful reexamination of what exactly it means to be the Church. A return to the fundamentals, if you will. Just like any art, sport, or other human endeavor where excellence is sought for and achieved, the Church in America must return to her biblical roots, to reexamine the original template to see how she must function to be faithful in this generation.

Drawing on the second chapter of Acts, this brief study examines the source material of the Christian faith, to identify the watermarks, those characteristics which must be present within a group of believers, or indeed any individual believer, to have the impact on this world they are meant to have, and still can.

The world in which we live offers to sell us happiness for a price, and the wares it offers include such things as possessions, pleasure, prestige, power, and even purpose. Unfortunately, as many people discover, none of these things--nor even any in any combination--can produce a sense of genuine, lasting happiness.

Or, as Saint Augustine put it, “Thou hast made us for Thyself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless ‘til they find their rest in Thee.”

Not surprisingly, the real source of lasting happiness comes from another source: our character--and even then, only as our character is formed into that of Christ’s.

In this study, Pastor Michael Scott takes us through the nine fruits of the Spirit to see how, by cooperating with the work of the Holy Spirit to transform us, we can discover the keys to a genuinely happy life.
